Suicide Bombers Track-by-Track “All For The Candy”– Caligulizer (Part 8)

CALiGULiZER
Chris: Every time when writing for a record I hope to do the “20-minute-song.” Revisiting old ideas and half finished songs can sometimes be an insane uphill battle. You kinda know what you are looking for and what those ideas need to reach their full potential, but you haven’t got a clue what those parts are… It’s almost like you know what you don’t want, but have no clue what you want and you have this fixed emotion, or idea, you need it to convey and it all gets very complicated to the point where it’s suffocating.
Things tend to get easier once you have a few completed songs written, so to break the cycle I always aim for the 20 minute song… That’s a song that can take anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours, or even a few days, to complete from the first idea you come up with on the spot, til a finished demo. It’s a nice, organic, way of writing as one part will usually follow the next and it builds from the ground up without too many fixed ideas narrowing the playing field. You will usually finish the song all the way through and then just fix small parts to make it better afterwards.
This started with the intro riff and the idea that I would use that riff as much as possible throughout the song. I managed to use it as an intro / main riff, between nearly each line in the verse and also under the entire chorus with the bass changing chords over it, to open the chorus. For the pre chorus I had the guitar riff first and tried different bass chords under. I came up with two good ideas, couldn’t decide which way to go and used both… hahaha. The last musical part was the middle eight, as usual.
This song took 3 days to complete and I remember that well as I demoed it every day and sent it off to a friend. By the third demo it was done.
The lyrics are about the #metoo campaign. There was a lot about this in America with famous names and documentaries, and just before I wrote the tune we had a similar case in Norway which brought it all a little closer to home. I was looking for a lyrical ideas and thought what about writing a song about #metoo, from the perpetrators point of view… and just use all those “lyrical pictures” that we’ve heard in the documentaries. Being the ultimate rock’n’roll villain anyway, I thought it would be a good idea and one that no one else had done yet.
The title is a play on the Roman emperor Caligula. The lyrics ended up just as creepy and disgusting as I was hoping for and, funnily enough, the whole story is in the four-word ad lib of the chorus “mesmeriser, tranquilizer, pornolizer, Caligulizer.” I have been told that these lyrics aren’t too far off from my other sexy lyrics, but to me there is a world of difference.
Stevie: Not much to add here other than It’s one of my favorites on the album, and probably one of my top 3 guitar solos I’m most proud of! I wrote and recorded it pretty quickly because I was working it out a fair amount of time before the album recording started. Sometimes you just hear the ideas pretty quickly and then it just really writes itself! Love how driving the whole song is, and just great lyrics. Pretty much a great song in total.
