Suicide Bombers Track-by-Track “All For The Candy”– All For The Candy (Part 7)

SUiCiDE BOMBERS are thrilled to present a track-by-track run-through of our latest record, ALL FOR THE CANDY, here at Junkyard Stories. This 12-part series will present one song every week, written by members of the band.

ALL FOR THE CANDY

Chris: Usually when time comes to write a new album I will look at all my ideas, get a feel for which ones will make the best record and then finish those. This time I had just become a father and my private life was really busy, so I told the band that rather than to do what I usually do, I would finish songs that were most complete first, just to get the ball rolling, and that maybe not all the songs in our demo drive would end up on the record. This was one of those nearly completed songs that I hadn’t really finished in the past and when revisiting I was surprised at how far it had already come. The intro, verse riff, pre chorus, middle eight and guitars olo were all there, as was most of the vocal melody and some lyrics. I saw I had toyed with 2 different pre choruses, but already landed the one that ended up on the album. The original demo had a craptastic chorus that wasn’t working at all, but after the song came 2 other choruses and the last one I had been working on was the one that ended up on the record… Kinda hard to understand why I didn’t just finish this when I first started writing it, but I remember struggling with the chorus for long and just kinda running out of steam. I think I loved the last chorus I came up with, but it was too high for me to sing properly at that time and that was the final nail in the coffin hahaha. I’m glad it was, because if I had finished the song back then, it would probably have a lesser chorus to fit better with my voice at the time, whereas now that I can reach those notes it’s a much better song for it.

I always loved this one, but it wasn’t the most obvious single to me… but when we started rehearsing it and the guys loved it so much, it was put forth as a possible single candidate. When we started shooting videos for this album, we were working on 3 videos at the same time, with this utilizing a bigger version of the set Slim built for the album cover and doing the whole shoot on that. The other videos lacked parts, while this would be done after that one day of shooting, so Slim suggested we just use this as the album launch single. With the insane amount of views it got, it was obviously a good choice.

Slim: This one has a more rock ‘n’ roll feel to it than most of the others. It was a good song as a demo when Chris brought it to us, but when we started playing it together it really started swinging and the song grew. I love the ending of the pre-chorus where Chris and Stevie actually go into boogie guitar and on the last time round Lyle hits the double bass drums and I echo it by going up an octave on the bass and machine gun out the notes with him.

Stevie: This was another one of those songs that grew so much when we started playing it and refined it, at rehearsals. It was definitely a good song from the demo stage, but when everyone put their touches on it, it really blew up in my opinion. This is also just a really fun song to do live, and lots of cool guitar parts, backing vocals etc.

The guitar solo was also another really fun one to write and record. I wanted to do something that utilizes open strings, so that’s when I came up with that opening melody of the solo, which I just played an octave higher on the second part of the solo. It turned out really cool, and one that I’m really proud of!
