MTV Host Vanessa Warwick – Why Supporting New Bands Still Matters?

Legendary television presenter and music journalist Vanessa Warwick, best known as the host of MTV Europe’s Headbangers Ball, was recently interviewed by Richy Kearns on his YouTube channel, RichyKearns Productions. Trough out the interview Warwick shared insights into her career, her experiences with some of rock’s biggest names, and her thoughts on the ever-evolving music landscape.

Warwick became the face of Headbangers Ball UK from 1989 to 1997, giving metal fans across Europe a chance to see exclusive interviews and performances from rising and established rock acts. Despite having no formal media training, she quickly adapted to the role, focusing on in-depth conversations rather than superficial celebrity coverage.

One of her proudest achievements was helping new bands break into the mainstream. “I was always really keen to give new bands a chance because I felt that the show had a duty to support the up-and-coming bands as well as the established ones,” Warwick said. Her efforts helped bands like Skid Row and countless others reach wider audiences at a time when mainstream radio and television largely ignored heavier music.

Now, we could have chosen something more ‘shocking’ and band-related from this interview—like the notorious interview with Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez or when she spoke to Eddie Vedder after Kurt Cobain’s death, or being at the opening of the Football World Cup 1998 with Ricky Martin (best World Cup ever). However, we specifically chose to quote this statement. Supporting new bands is something we at Junkyard Rock Stories strongly stand for. Hearing something like this from a journalist and TV personality like Vanessa is invaluable and exactly what all music outlets should still be doing today. But let’s not kid ourselves—we all know that, especially nowadays, this is definitely not the case.

All in all, this is an interview you simply cannot miss. Our friend Richy Kearns has once again done a great job, asking interesting and relevant questions—something even Vanessa herself thanked him for. So? What are you waiting for? Click play now!
