The Darkness Top the Charts Again Thanks to Taylor Swift

Posted on September 12, 2024September 12, 2024 By JP

Over 20 years after its release, The Darkness’ hit song “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” has reached the top of the US iTunes Rock Chart, and it’s all thanks to pop superstar Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce!

The renewed interest in the iconic rock anthem came after a video went viral showing Swift and Kelce having a great time dancing and singing along to the song at the US Open Women’s Final in New York on September 8, 2024. Fans couldn’t get enough of their fun moment, and as a result, the song has rocketed up the charts, not only in the US but around the world.

Justin Hawkins’ Heartfelt Response

The Darkness’ frontman, Justin Hawkins, couldn’t be more thrilled. He took to TikTok to express his gratitude, sharing how Swift has been a long-time fan of the band. Hawkins revealed that just a few weeks ago, he and his daughter attended Taylor Swift’s concert in Zurich, where they were treated to incredible hospitality.

Hawkins described the event as a dream come true, saying, “They put us in a lovely VIP area, I had Chris Rock on one side and Roger Federer on the other. I was dad of the year!”

To top it all off, Swift left him a thoughtful letter, expressing how much she loved “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”. Hawkins said his daughter was thrilled, and that this experience made him feel like the “dad of the century.”

When the video of Swift and Kelce enjoying the song at the US Open surfaced, Hawkins said it was a heartwarming moment for him. “Thanks Taylor, thanks Travis, thanks everybody who enjoys tennis,” he said, surprised by the resurgence of the track’s popularity.

The Song’s Original Success

When The Darkness song “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” was first released in September 2003, it became an instant hit. It reached Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and climbed into the Top 10 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Now, thanks to this viral moment, the song is enjoying a whole new wave of success, reminding fans old and new of its timeless appeal.

Once again, it’s proven that there are no rules or specific formulas for how a song can become a hit overnight – or, in this case, for an older song to do it all over again. Sometimes, all you need an extremely viral video or a placement in a popular TV show or movie. And sometimes, all it takes is what happened here – a pop star dancing and having fun in the right moment, and today’s pop culture standards will do the rest.
