Martin Sweet Admits The Savage Playground Didn’t Meet Expectations: “It Turned Out Really Shitty”
In a recent interview for Sleaze Roxx, Martin Sweet was asked about the band’s fourth album, The Savage Playground from 2013, to which the guitarist of Crashdïet gave a very interesting response.
Sleaze Roxx: I think one of the best records in Crashdïet’s discography is ‘Generation Wild’. This album has quality tracks from top to bottom and sounds fantastic. You followed it with ‘The Savage Playground’, which sounds very different and has muddy production. Would you be able to say what happened between these two albums?
Martin Sweet: What happened? ‘The Savage Playground’ turned out really shitty. I think we started mixing the song called “Cocaine Cowboys” first. That was the first track mixed off that album. It sounded quite good. Then as we continued, we were under a lot of pressure too, having to make quick decisions. At a certain point there was no turning back, you know, once we started mixing it. And the other songs didn’t come out quite as good as “Cocaine Cowboys,” I think. In retrospect, I don’t like that mix at all because it sounds like a cheap record [laughter].
In addition to this throwback to earlier times, the interview also touched on the album Automaton, as well as plans for the future regarding the release of new music. The interview took place at Ålvik Rock Fest in Norway on September 14th 2024 and was conducted by writer and contributor to the famous website Sleaze Roxx, Jerzy Nikiel, a close friend of Junkyard Rock Stories. The format of the interview was a group one, so other band members, Joe Elliot, Michael Sweet, and Ludwig Norlander from the band Confess, who replaced Peter London at this concert as he was unable to perform, also participated.
