Alice In Chains “Jar Of Flies” – 30th Anniversary Reissue Announced

Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, has announced a buzz-worthy 30th-anniversary reissue of Alice In Chains’ groundbreaking EP, “Jar Of Flies.” Originally released on January 25, 1994, the EP made history by debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200.

To mark the milestone, the band’s official webstore will feature various exclusive versions, including tri-colored vinyl, cassette releases, and a clear vinyl variant with embedded “flies.” The standout is a deluxe box set comprising the EP on tri-colored vinyl, a logo-embossed jar with touch-activated red LED lighting and faux flies, a 60-page hardcover book, and a double-sided poster – all presented in a screen-printed, UV-coated shadowbox. This reissue promises to captivate both devoted fans and collectors, offering a unique and immersive celebration of Alice In Chains’ enduring legacy with “Jar Of Flies.”

Dirt” (1992), Alice In Chains found solace in the intimate and acoustic setting of the studio for their next project, “Jar Of Flies.” The EP, released after the grueling tour, marked the first time singer Layne Staley, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, and drummer Sean Kinney collaborated with bassist Mike Inez, who joined the band midway through their 1993 tour. With no pre-written songs, the sessions allowed the band to explore their chemistry in a more relaxed environment, and the result, according to Kinney, “all fell into place.” The self-produced EP served as a spiritual sequel to their previous acoustic-driven EP, “Sap” (1992), and became a testament to the band’s versatility, featuring tracks like “I Stay Away,” “No Excuses,” and “Don’t Follow.”

The release of “Jar Of Flies” not only showcased Alice In Chains’ musical range but also solidified their status as one of the most unique and captivating rock bands of the decade. The EP received critical acclaim, earning the band two Grammy Award nominations for Best Hard Rock Performance (“I Stay Away”) and Best Recording Package. Tracks from the EP found a place in retrospective year-end lists by Rolling Stone and Guitar World. In 2022, “Jar Of Flies” achieved a significant milestone, being certified 4x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), underscoring its enduring impact on the rock music landscape.
